Really worth it. They make their own bread and it is probably the best bread for sandwich you can try. Crispy but fluffy, it smells and tastes like good Neapolitan pizza dough. The rest of the ingredients are mostly great quality too (maybe except the sandwich that carries the shop name, a bit counterintuitive). Overall way more than you can ask for a quick and cheap grab.

This is the Mario sandwich. So many, many, many people have told me it’s the most amazing thing ever. I’d never tried it—I don’t like queuing during my lunch break. And cash? I’m fine with paying taxes 😉.
But I just got back from Austria, where they love cash as much as Mario does. And I was in a good mood. So bring on the Mario!
First off, the queue isn’t bad. They work like mad to fill orders.
The Italiaanse bol was still warm. Good times! But what the hell is an Italiaanse bol anyway? I’ve never seen them in Italy, have you? That said, fresh bread is and will always be delicious.
Mario fills the sandwich with a single slice of nondescript Dutch cheese—because, according to Dutch food law, thou shalt never serve more than one slice of cheese. Then comes some boring Dutch “salami” and a mildly spicy salami that actually deserves the name. The slices are thick, but I’d rather have them thinly sliced and get more of it.
Topped off with a generous helping of pickled raw carrots and radish.
This is, truly, the most Dutch sandwich. Everything is pitched down enough so no one can dislike it. And at €5, Dutch people won’t complain.
There’s nothing really wrong with it, but it’s boring. Utrecht has so much more to offer than this.

Fast, delicious food; no place to seat...the one bench nearby, over the canal is perennially occupied... Maybe try nearby Flora's Garden...hope I don't get in trouble for sending u there...is really quiet and calm...

Awesome self baked bread with lots of filling got this place famous in Utrecht. But I am more of a fan of their Salami Pizza. It was fluffy and tasted fresh, in short it was the best Pizza I ever had!

Amazing restaurant, with hearty food that's bang-for-your-buck in carbs. The Dubbele Mario is the best, with extra pepper (if you like spice). Used to sell hot calzones, which were also amazing. Sad that they are gone now. Bring cash! They do not accept pin.

The most delicious sandwich! The ingredients make this so good fresh baked buns still warm with the best filling, I had the Mario you have to try this one. Nice spot to sit and eat the sandwich just by the bridge. Nice friendly staff there to help you along with the choices. Great value as well! Cash only so come prepared.

Simple, fast and delicious. The bread was genuinely incredible - so soft and fresh. I highly recommend grabbing these to go and taking them a little further up the canal where you can sit right on the bank!

The fact that there always a long line with this cash only place in a country where most people don’t carry cash with them anymore, says a lot. Don’t worry, the line moves siker quickly and the sandwiches are fresh!

A visit to Utrecht isn’t complete if you haven’t stopped for a calzone at Mario’s. Quick service, affordable prices and amazing food. Beware that you have to pay with cash only but it’s worth it. Don’t hesitate in case there is a long queue, it moves very fast!

The sandwiches and pizza from here are so delicious. They're made fresh and quickly with great vegetarian options. My only critique is that they should consider a vegan option on the menu! For the price the food is absolutely fantastic and reminds you that good food comes from good quality, simple ingredients

Perfect place for broodjes and calzoni. Good dough in pizza and calzone though they don't use fresh mushrooms. The bad thing is that you have to pay cash. Must go if you are in Utrecht.
Super flavour, somehow more tasty than in florence, the pizza is cheap and the topping is a loooootttt… Super recommended!!

You haven't been to Utrecht if you don't eat here! I have been going since my childhood and I still miss the taste of Broodje Mario from far away. It was also my fathers favourite place. You can't get a sandwich like it even in Italy. The photo is old, but I couldn't resist not to write about Broodje Mario!
Fresh sandwiches or broodjes stuffed with delicious ingredients and only 5€. Sit and enjoy on a bench with canal views. It’s old school cash only. The line moves fast and worth it!
